News - White Mountain Festival 2007
Acoustic music and more at White Mountain
Start ticking off the days and get ready for this year’s White Mountain Festival – KwaZulu-Natal’s only acoustic festival that promises three days of laid back music in an awesome setting. Happening over the Heritage Day long weekend (September 21-24) at White Mountain Lodge in the foothills of the Giant’s Castle Nature Reserve near Estcourt, the festival offers over 35 live acts and a host of other activities for the whole family.
Platform for established and up-and-coming artists
Included in the line-up are UK folk-rock group Magna Carta, acclaimed blues guitarist Dan Patlansky, Farryl Purkiss, Southern Gypsey Queen, Rory Eliot & The Reason, Sitter, Habit To, Celtis, Laurie Levine and Josie Field, all of whom will perform acoustic sets. See the full programme below.
This year will also see the introduction of live music in the lodge’s restaurant and pub, where a number of up-and-coming solo artists will perform to a more intimate crowd. The organisers are passionate about creating a platform for new talent and approached well-known Durban singer/songwriter Roly Struckmeyer to put this mini showcase together, which will feature Brett Cox, Shannon Connolly, Corn Meyer, Dustin (Crusty) Volker, Gavin Ferguson, Hanré Loots, Jean Morrison and Mitch Barné.
Beer market
Aside from the live entertainment, there’ll also be a variety of food stalls and a beer market featuring naturally brewed ales, lagers, draughts and fruit beers from Nottingham Road Brewing Company, Bavaria Breweries, South Coast Breweries, Shongweni Brewery and, of course, the full selection of SAB brands.
Arts and crafts
Whether you’re buying or just browsing, the craft market promises an array of stalls selling everything from hammocks to handcrafted jewellery and puppets, clothing, décor items, leather goods, original artworks and organic healing creams and oils. With the support of the Imbabazane Municipality, crafters from the local community will also bring their bead, wire and woven creations to life right before your eyes.
Outdoor activities
For the more adventurous, there’s abseiling down a 45m cliff face or a fuffi slide across a nearby 100m-wide gorge, with helicopter flips also available if the weather permits. Or there’s always hiking, boating or bass fishing in either of the lodge’s two dams (bring your own rods), or the option of simply taking time out to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of what is truly one of the most idyllic spots in the Berg.
Tickets are available at Game stores in KZN (R250), Computicket (R300) and at the festival gate (R350). The price includes camping facilities for the entire long weekend and children under 12 pay R50. Day tripper tickets are also available at the gate and there is lots of secure parking.
